Sean Burton (Marketing Manager) and Meredith Fabe (Marketing Assistant).

In early October, In Touch Outdoor successfully added 5 branded Jive busses to the outdoor exposure portfolio of Quality Beverages.  The colourful busses is a further strengthening of their brand building program, which saw the addition of 20 taxis for this Western Cape Based Brand in the past year.  Jive has become an excellent example of a client who started out with a handful of billboards, and over the past 6 years gradually built up their outdoor advertising portfolio by selectively adding road-side billboards, as well as moving media, to their outdoor portfolio.

OpenXposure launches new website

OpenXposure, an outdoor media owner specialising in affordable Outdoor Advertising in the Western Cape, recently launched their new website.

www.openxposure.co.za.

This is a user-friendly portal to view ALL their billboards. It integrates with google maps, so that you can zoom in and out, to see the exact position of each billboard. When you then click on the billboard position, you will view the information sheet, which will give you the billboard dimensions, description of the viewing audience, and a photograph and sample of a recent advertiser. Simply click though the links, to make enquiries about availabilities and rates of sites. Easy planning of geographic reach can be done by virtue of viewing the map of the whole Western Cape.

For their launch, they offered one lucky advertiser ONE MONTH OF FREE ADVERTISING. This competition was won by PR Pools, and their advert was on display on a billboard in the CBD of Milnerton, facing Koeberg Road, for the month of August:

Paul (PR Pools) and Conrad (In Touch Outdoor) in front of the PR Pools billboard.

The OpenXposure holding consists of two categories of road-side billboards:

  1. Tri-vision billboards which rotate to display three consecutive adverts – cost-effective long-term branding opportunities.
  2. Static, wall-mounted billboards in areas identified for high impact campaign advertising.

The following static billboards in key strategic areas are available from October:

BELLVILLE CBD – COMMUTER NODE

Voortrekker Road, in the heart of the Bellville CBD. This is a 4 m high X 16 m wide supersite. It is a wall-mounted flex-face, with illumination for 24 hour visibility. The billboard is viewed by traffic on Voortrekker Road coming from Modderdam and Bill Bezuidenhout Roads, one block before they reach the Durban Road intersection. The billboard is also viewed by pedestrians, and commuters using the busy Bellville Bus, Train and Taxi Terminus which is situated one block away from the site.

MARINE DRIVE – PAARDEN EILAND MORNING PEAK HOUR

Marine Drive, between Milnerton and Cape Town CBDs. This is a 4 m high X 16 m wide supersite. It is a wall-mounted flex-face, with illumination for 24 hour visibility. The billboard is viewed by traffic on Marine Drive coming from all the residential extensions of greater Western Seaboard, including Milnerton, Table View, Parklands and Bloubergstrand. The billboard is viewed at the entry point to Paarden Eiland, en route to Cape Town CBD and the N1 Highway. Exposure to morning peak-hour, and the new Rapid Bus Transport System.

From the tri-vision portfolio, for the first time in YEARS, select sites with exposure to morning peak-hour will be available from October onwards, including:

NOTE:  All these billboards are 3 m high X 6 m wide, and carry three advertisers displayed consecutively. This is eye-catching, and makes for excellent long-term branding at reasonable rates. The billboards are illuminated at night.

MARINE DRIVE – WOODBRIDGE MILNERTON

Marine Drive, between Milnerton and Cape Town CBDs. This billboard is seen by peak-hour still-standing morning traffic as traffic reaches the end of Milnerton, just before the Boundary Road Intersection. Traffic en route to Cape Town CBD, Southern Suburbs and the N1 Highway. Exposure to ALL RESIDENTIAL nodes of the Western Seaboard.

N1 HIGHWAY – CORNER OF DURBAN ROAD

This billboard is viewed by traffic on the busy N1 Highway on driver’s left, right next to the exit to Durban Road. This gives dual exposure to traffic heading towards Cape Town, as well as traffic as they enter Durban Road. The N1 carries morning peak-hour at this point, traffic coming from the R300 and surrounding residential areas of the Northern Suburbs. Great exposure at one of the busiest exits off the Highway to the Tyger Valley Area.

M5 HIGHWAY – SOUTHERN SUBURBS

Facing the busy M5 Highway, this billboard is viewed by afternoon peak-hour traffic coming from the N2 Highway, Cape Town CBD and Northern Suburbs, entering the Southern Suburbs, just before the Kenilworth Bridge, Access Park and Kenilworth Shopping Centre.

KOEBERG / PLATTEKLOOF INTERSECTION

This billboard is viewed by traffic on Plattekloof Road coming from the N7 Highway towards Milnerton and Table View, as well as traffic on Koeberg Road coming from Table View towards Milnerton and the N7 Highway. This is a very busy intersection, with high traffic volumes all day.

In Touch in July

Well we’ve World Cupped, we’ve school holidayed, some of us have year-ended; and here we are, ready to carry on with business-as-usual!  A hearty welcome to Conrad Schutte who joined our team as Key Account Manager in June.

Yolanda, Margie & Conrad supporting our team.

“Less is more” is hard when I have so many exciting opportunities for outdoor exposure crossing my desk daily!  This blog is shared with a wide variety of clients;  from small owner-managed companies, to large international concerns, as well as advertising agencies and specialist media houses, which also means that buying is done from R1 000 a month ad-spend, up to over R100 000 per month per advert.

WELL DONE SPAR!

We would like to congratulate SPAR and their ad agency TBWA, for these great layouts to show their support of the FIFA World Cup.  Such good examples of powerful outdoor designs:

MEDIA ON THE MOVE

I have recently reviewed the category ”moving media” and am pleasantly surprised with the reasonable rates out there, for reaching large audiences.  Taxi and Bus Branding are traditionally associated with exposure to townships, mass market, and lower LSM reach, but I have news for you….

You can target the areas you wish to reach, including higher income catchment areas in the major metropoles of South Africa, by choosing your routes.  I am currently presenting proposals to clients in the retail industry needing exposure around major shopping centres in Pretoria East and the northern areas of Johannesburg, and am really loving what I am seeing.

Mobile for African Songbook

In Touch Outdoor just finalised the planning of  a taxi branding campaign for JIVE cooldrinks in the Western Cape, so keep you eyes on the road from September onwards to see their colourful ads.  We also recently completed a Mobile Trailer Campaign for Cape Town Opera.  They used the medium strategically for 2 of their shows.

Examples of mobile media:

Scooter Platform for Ouma Rusks

  • Bus Branding – Full Bus / Double Decker Bus
  • Bus Branding – Backs of Busses; very reasonably priced & excellent viewing opportunity
  • Taxi Branding – External as well as Internal opportunities
  • London Taxi Cabs – Beautiful Full Vehicle Wraps in all major cities
  • Scooter Platforms – a new versatile concept; great for hard-to-reach target areas, and client can specify footprint for reach.
  • Airport Runway Bus Branding

Targeted Audiences at major International Airports

PORT ELIZABETH AIRPORT

New sites, including entry/exit gantries spanning across the road, are now available at the PE Airport, and well worth adding to an airport exposure holdings to increase footprint of exposure.

Other airports offering great opportunities to take into consideration:

  • Lanseria International Airport
  • Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport

MIDLANDS MEANDER (Mpumalanga)

Reach nature lovers, adventurers, tourists visiting this beautiful part of our country.  A portfolio of five 3X6 billboards are available:

  • Dullstroom (main entrance)
  • Belfast (main entrance)
  • Graskop (main entrance)
  • Sabie (main entrance)
  • Delmas (2 locations, TBE)

Photographs, maps, prices and information about each town available on request.

Well, that’s all from me for now, do remember to subscribe (top right-hand side of blog), but we’ll send reminders of new posts to your inbox for a while to let you know there’s an update on our blog.

N1 Highway Cape Town – Premium Site Upgrade

Structure as seen at present

A lot of our clients have wondered what is happening at the old KFM billboard adjacent to N1 City Mall on the N1 Highway in Cape Town.

People living in Cape Town have noticed that this billboard has been vacant for quite a while, and looking derelict. In the past few weeks a new outer structure has been installed on the site, and the site is now ready to go. The good news is that the ad spaces are still available, so let me know if you are interested in the prices then I’ll mail it to you. Unfortunately I cannot display prices on my Blogpage as its public domain, and I have to honour the different media owners that I work with, so you’ll have to mail me for that information. But what I can tell you here, is this:

· The structure is 12 m high X 12 m wide, giving a total advertising area of 144 m².

· It will have external illumination, and it will remain a double-sided structure, with the advertising spaces seen on two sides, being Driver’s Right seen as you approach Bellville coming from Cape Town, viewed by home-bound afternoon peak-hour traffic, and Driver’s Left, seen as you come down Plattekloof Hill heading towards Cape Town, viewed by morning peak-hour traffic.

· The type of structure is a ‘tri-vision’, which means that 3 ad spaces are available on each side of the billboard.

· This gives an excellent opportunity to companies wanting to OWN this landmark, and use the different ad spaces for their various brands.

· Print and installation is a separate cost, and payable each time the client wishes to change artwork.

Map showing location of the billboard.

This is a premium advertising space on the N1 Highway, due to its sheer size and domination of the surrounding urban landscape.

In Touch Outdoor – in a nutshell…

Welcome to IN TOUCH OUTDOOR’s Blog, where you will get updates on the happenings – and sometimes not happenings - of out-of-home advertising in South Africa.  To the uninitiated, “out-of-home” is the word used in the media industry for above-the-line outdoor media, which really actually only means things like:

  • billboards
  • bus shelters
  • roadside hoardings
  • wall wraps
  • airport advertising
  • taxi and other vehicle branding

… and sometimes some wacky stuff where clients can brand and display their wares to the public.

IN TOUCH OUTDOOR’s position in this unique and specialised media field, is to put together outdoor media plans for clients and agencies, or assist them in sourcing additional information to what they already have, and then to see these through client presentations, mapping, selection, shortlisting, negotiation, placement and final execution of campaigns.  Lots of words…. lots of steps…. and 15 years experience in doing just that!

Our clients include national brands, small businesses, quirky characters, ad agencies and media houses; if you or your brand want to be seen out there, chances are we can match your budget and brief to recommended media, and get it done for you!
